  • Fuji Electric Supplies Equipment for Ground-Breaking Bridge Testing Facility

    Edison, N.J.  –  Fuji Electric Corp. of America has announced their role as a critical equipment provider in the recent unveiling of the world’s first accelerated bridge-testing facility.  The Bridge Evaluation and Accelerated Structural Testing (BEAST) lab, located at Rutgers University in Piscataway, NJ will provide valuable data and insight into the degradation of bridges due to environmental and maintenance factors in a matter of weeks or months instead of years or decades.  The electronics manufacturer’s VG Drive plays an integral role in the facility, powering the winch that propels the truck chassis over the bridge deck.

    “Fuji Electric is honored to be a part of this revolutionary project and we are proud that our products were selected for their durability and reliability,” said Philip Charatz, President and CEO of Fuji Electric Corp. of America.  “The VG Drive is capable of operating 24/7 without fail, and will allow for uninterrupted research as these critical experiments are conducted.”

    Designed and constructed through a collaborative effort between Rutgers University’s Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT) and Applied Research Associates (ARA), the project spanned 6 years from start to finish, beginning with the conceptual phase in 2009 and completing construction in the spring of 2015.  The laboratory provides a condensed view into the effects that the environment and heavy traffic have on full-scale bridge decks and substructures that take the brunt of wear and tear. Test results will give bridge owners more confidence in decisions relating to materials and rehabilitation methods.
    “The validity of our testing depends on maintaining tightly controlled parameters. We can’t afford any component in this facility to fail or it will throw off the data,” said Andrés Roda, P.E., CAIT senior research engineer and BEAST operations manager. “The answers we get from the BEAST can potentially save billions of dollars in infrastructure costs, so there’s a lot at stake.”

    Fuji Electric’s 460V three-phase 132KW VG Drive is a high-performance, low voltage systems drive designed with advanced technology, typically used in sophisticated applications requiring high performance and low maintenance.  The driving force of the BEAST’s carriage is a winch built by Foley Material Handling, Inc. Including a 400 HP Continuous Duty Motor, the drive train accelerates the test carriage from 0-20mph in a distance of 20ft. The carriage then travels 60 feet at constant velocity before decelerating to zero speed in 20ft and reversing direction.

  • Fuji Electric Acquires North American Manufacturer SEMEC Electromecanique, Inc.

    Edison, NJ – Fuji Electric Corp. of America has announced that they have acquired a majority share of Canadian rail manufacturer SEMEC Electromecanique Inc.  (hereinafter, SEMEC) in order to expand their transit business in North America and broaden their product lineup with the manufacturer’s railway vehicle door opening and closing equipment.  Fuji Electric plans to leverage SEMEC’s engineering strengths, sales channels and service capabilities, adding to their own Transit business which is comprised of door opening and closing devices, propulsion, and auxiliary power supply devices.

    “SEMEC has a solid reputation for manufacturing quality products, and they are a well-rounded company skilled at everything from development, to production, to sales,” said Philip Charatz, President and CEO of Fuji Electric Corp. of America. “This business model will complement our Transit business nicely and will support our long-term growth initiatives in North America.”

    The two companies solidified an agreement for Fuji Electric to purchase 51% of SEMEC and the deal was completed in February.  The name of the newly formed company is Fuji SEMEC Inc, and will be known as Fuji SEMEC Corp. in the state of New York.  Fuji Electric will add their own technological capabilities in design and production engineering to SEMEC’s designs for door opening and closing devices in order to enhance their overall product offering. Fuji Electric will also benefit from SEMEC’s manufacturing subsidiaries in New York in order to strengthen their bidding position on projects under the Buy American Act guidelines , and other similar laws and regulations in New York*.  Fuji Electric has an extensive delivery record of its railcar door opening and closing devices, including the New York City Transit Authority, Metropolitan Washington D.C. Department of Transportation, Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit District, and more. The power electronics manufacturer has also supplied Washington subways with auxiliary power units.

    “This acquisition, coupled with our recent opening of a 37,000 sq. ft. factory in Virginia to develop auxiliary power supply devices for railways, is a testament to our strategic vision for our North American Transit business,” added Charatz.  “We have an aggressive 5-year growth plan and are committed to taking the major steps necessary to achieve those goals.”

  • New Joint Venture with Local Engineering Firm Aims to Expand Business Operations in India

    Tokyo, March 28, 2016 – Fuji Electric Co., Ltd. (TSE:6504) (“FE”), headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, led by President Michihiro Kitazawa, is pleased to announce that it has established a joint venture with a highly successful engineering firm in India. Fuji Electric will acquire a 51% stake in the new venture, which will be established with the aim of expanding business operations in the region. The partner firm, Gemco Controls Limited (Gemco), has signed a contract with Fuji Electric under which it will continue its existing business activities. Gemco is located in the city of Faridabad in the north Indian state of Haryana.

     

    1. Background
    India is undergoing significant economic development. The country has been pushing ahead with a production-driven growth strategy under its “Make in India” policy with the aim of taking its manufacturing sector from the current 17% to 25% of GDP by 2022. At the same time, Fuji Electric is estimating that the industrial power electronics market in India (which includes industrial infrastructure as well as power electronic devices) is set to grow at 9% a year between 2016 and 2018.

    Fuji Electric established Fuji Electric India, a sales and marketing subsidiary, in Mumbai in 2009. The company has been selling drive products like low voltage inverters as well as components for temperature controllers and other instrumentation devices, but the rise of companies in emerging markets has made price competition increasingly fierce in the region. Fuji Electric India is now looking to set itself apart by offering systems solutions.

    2.Objectives
    Fuji Electric India will continue with its current business operations while tapping into the engineering strengths of Gemco and acquiring end-user job references as a means of accessing end-user markets.

    Gemco is a leading engineering firm in India and the surrounding area, with a successful track record delivering goods to steelmakers as well as companies manufacturing paper, tube, wire & cable, sugar and a variety of other materials. The company has built its engineering business by taking its in-house control panels (which are standardized and manufactured at minimal cost) and pairing them with customized software tailored to the needs of its individual customers.

    Fuji Electric is in the process of constructing a low voltage inverters assembly plant in India, which is scheduled for completion in June. By tapping into Gemco’s outstanding engineering and manufacturing capabilities as well as its extensive sales and marketing channels, the company hopes jumpstart sales negotiations for systems that combine Gemco control panels and locally manufactured low voltage inverters with the medium voltage inverters, motors, instrumentation devices, monitoring and control systems, and other Fuji Electric products that have already been successful in the industrial infrastructure sector.

    Going forward, Fuji Electric is looking to target metal, mining and mineral sector as well as equipment manufacturers like cranes, press processors, and more. The plan is to increase company sales in the industrial infrastructure and power electronic device business in India from its current level of JPY 3.0 billion to JPY 6.0 billion by FY2018.

  • Fuji Electric Announces Release of New High-Speed Discrete IGBT Series

    Edison, NJ – Fuji Electric has added a new lineup of power semiconductors to its product portfolio with the “High-Speed W” Series of high-speed discrete IGBTs*.   The new product series utilizes a thinner IGBT chip for miniaturization, thereby reducing power loss (turnoff loss) in switching operation by approximately 40% compared to conventional products (High-Speed V Series). This contributes to energy saving and power cost reduction of the devices on which the products are mounted. Loss in switching operation has also been reduced (suppressed heat generation) for compatibility with higher switching frequencies (20 to 100 kHz) compared to conventional products (around 20 kHz).

     “The introduction of the High-Speed W Series is a valuable addition to our product portfolio as it offers our customers advanced features that they need to compete in today’s market,” said Jeff Knapp, General Manager of Fuji Electric’s Semiconductor Dept. “The new IGBT allows the ability to downsize the peripheral parts such as coils and transformers within the system and therefore contributes to the overall downsizing of the equipment itself, leading to a reduction in the total cost of ownership.”

    The company cites the increasing global demand for energy in recent years as the driving force behind the development of the High-Speed W Series.  The need for the energy-saving performance of industrial and communications equipment, as well as the demand for downsizing and space-saving of the equipment itself spurred them to introduce a high-speed discrete IGBT that responded to these needs.

  • Fuji Electric Introduces HVAC Combination Variable Frequency Drives in North America

    Edison, N.J.  –  Fuji Electric Corp. of America has announced that they have begun manufacturing their FRENIC-HVAC Combination Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) in the company’s new factory in Roanoke, VA in order to reduce turnaround time and customize panels to suit customers’ individual applications.  The complete series includes 208V, 460V and 575V panels and provides ease of installation, start- up, and field troubleshooting.

    “We’re excited to complete final assembly on our new FRENIC-HVAC Combination VFDs right here in our Virginia Factory ,” said David Schrader, Business Development Manager for Fuji Electric Corp. of America.  “These panels are suitable for a variety of applications, and local production means we are able to remain agile and modify the product as needed to meet the evolving needs of our customers.”

  • Fuji Electric Releases 7th Generation IGBT Module–Manufacturer Broadens Semiconductor Product Portfolio for Industrial Applications

    Fuji Electric has introduced their 7th Generation IGBT Modules featuring advanced chip and package technologies for industrial applications, uninterruptible power supplies, and power conditioning systems.  The latest addition to their Semiconductor product portfolio offers an increased current rating for reduced package sizes, improved power cycling capability for superior reliability, and is capable of continuous operating temperature of 175°C for increased output current.

    “The enhancements we’ve made to the 7th Generation IGBT modules are significant and will make a real difference for our customers,” said Phil Charatz, President and CEO of Fuji Electric Corp. of America.  “Fuji Electric is looked upon as a market leader, and our customers rely on us to develop products that are smaller, faster, stronger, and better. This product lineup exceeds those expectations.”

    Additional product features include a performance improvement in the trade-off relationship between Von and Eoff (characteristics) as a result of the thinner drift layer and fine pattern of the trench pitch.  The structure and materials of the module have been improved to increase its stability and durability under high-temperature operation, thereby improving the stability and reliability of the equipment on which the module is installed.  The series will be available in phases: 1200V IGBT modules are currently available for shipment, and will be followed by the 650V and 1700V modules.

  • Fuji Electric Opens Engineering & Assembly Facility in Roanoke, Virginia

    Edison, N.J., September 4, 2015Fuji Electric announced that they have opened a new 37,000 square foot engineering and assembly facility in Roanoke, Virginia which will focus on assembly of their Variable Speed Drive Custom Panels , Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPS), and Auxiliary Power Systems (APS).  The announcement is the latest move by the company to grow and expand their business activities in the U.S., as it will allow them to respond more quickly to local market conditions and reduce lead time on product shipments.

    “Fuji Electric’s U.S. Engineering team has been operating out of our original Roanoke, Virginia facility since June 2007, so when we decided to open a larger facility and expand our engineering and production efforts, Roanoke was a natural fit for our business,” said Philip Charatz, President and CEO of Fuji Electric Corp. of America.  “The city has a strong manufacturing presence with a large pool of qualified, skilled employees, and this new facility will give us the ability to support our increasing Drives business along with our other growing divisions.”

    Located at 105 14th Street NW just outside of downtown Roanoke, Fuji Electric has begun production on custom panels for Drives customers and will conduct assembly, witness testing and sales training on their newly released Uninterruptible Power Systems.  Production on APS products will begin in November.

  • Fuji Electric Announces Acquisition of Turbine Generator and Power Plant Service Company

    Edison, NJ – Fuji Electric Co., Ltd. (TSE:6504), headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, led by President Michihiro Kitazawa, is pleased to announce that its U.S. subsidiary Fuji Electric Corp. of America has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the turbine and power plant service business of RTS Holdings, Inc. and its subsidiaries (“RTS”), headquartered in Sullivan, Missouri, U.S.A and serving the North, Central, and South American markets. The acquisition is part of Fuji Electric’s global expansion plan, which is focused on expanding the company’s energy-related businesses through the acquisitions of strategically placed regional businesses abroad.

    “With many power plants aging in recent years, the need for inspection, repair, and maintenance services is increasing,” said Phil Charatz, President and CEO of Fuji Electric Corp. of America. “This acquisition will serve to expand Fuji Electric’s power generation business in the Americas and strengthen our ability to capture new orders for power production equipment as existing equipment requires replacement.”

    The acquisition of RTS will help to increase Fuji Electric’s service capabilities, addressing the growing demand for maintenance and repair services and broadening Fuji Electric’s existing service area and network. RTS has a proven track record as a specialist in the field, primarily in the United States, and is recognized by power producers in the region for its ability to provide rapid response to repair and maintenance needs.

    RTS Holdings, Inc. (RTS) was established in 1984 in Sullivan, Missouri and is led by President Tim Weiss. With 60 employees, the company’s primary business activities are repairing and maintaining steam turbines and generators (as well as their peripheral devices). “RTS is very excited about the tremendous benefit that Fuji Electric’s world class products, engineering capabilities, and excellent reputation in the power generation industry will bring to RTS’ customers and our own team, as well,” said Tim Weiss. Upon completion of the acquisition, which is scheduled to be complete on August 31, 2015, Fuji Electric will have 100% ownership of RTS. Fuji Electric plans to continue providing the same repair and maintenance services.

    Fuji Electric Corp. of America has announced that they will enter the North American Uninterruptible Power System market with a new model aimed at the growing Data Center segment.  The 480V 3-phase 3-wire transformer-less UPS is based on the electronics manufacturers’ proprietary Reverse Blocking IGBT technology, achieving efficiency ratings of over 97%.  The UL-certified UPS7000HX-T3U Series is offered in 300, 400, and 500kVA power ratings and is built on open architecture for ease-of-installation and convenient service.

    As part of their channel strategy, Fuji Electric will partner with both national and regional integrators and service providers to penetrate markets that require mid-to-large sized uninterruptible power systems.

    The UPS7000HX utilizes Advanced T-type Neutral Point Clamped 3-level circuit topology, which provides superior efficiency and effectively reduces the total cost of ownership.  By adopting the company’s own patented RB-IGBT technology, they have achieved reduction in power losses, and have reduced the total number of components in the system.
