  • Fuji Electric’s New Power Supply Design Delivers 300 Watts From 1U Ultra Slim Hot-Swap Format

    Edison, N.J., June 4, 2013 – Fuji Electric Corp. of America, a global leader in providing power solutions for original equipment manufactures in a wide range of markets, today added a 300 watt, 12VDC hot-swap power supply design that meets 80Plus Silver standard for efficiency. This power supply provides a highly efficient bulk front-end solution in a ultra slim chassis size that system designers need for compact servers and data processing applications.

    Designed primarily for space-constrained critical applications requiring hot-swap, the 300 watt FH300UAD power supply has a chassis design easily applied to 1U applications. The input is applied with a front mounted standard IEC C14 connector and output connections at the opposite end with a Tyco 6450330-1. Measuring just 1.58 X 2.15 X 10 inches (40.2 x 54.5 X 260mm) multiple power supplies are used where scaleable AC-DC power is needed.

    Designed to operate from any input voltage in the range 100 to 264 VAC, the FH300UAD uses active power factor correction to maximize efficiency and ensure compliance with the international EN 61000-3-2 standard for harmonic current emission. User interface for control and monitoring are achieved with I2C and PSMI protocols. A main output of 12 VDC is generated for suppling power to dc-dc converters in systems using distributive power architectures, together with a 5 VDC standby output rated at 2A for power management circuitry.

    Fault condition protection include, undervoltage, overvoltage and overcurrent of the main and standby outputs, fan failure and overtemperature. The ambient operating temperature range is 0°C to 50°C with cooling by a low-noise, high quality internal fan. Designed for long term reliability applications the FH300UAD has a calculated MTBF of over 200,000 hrs.

  • Fuji Electric Expands Power Supply Line-Up with Addition of High Voltage Power Supply Designed for Telecommunications Industry

    Edison, N.J., April 16, 2013Fuji Electric Corp. of America has expanded its line-up of high-efficiency 48V front-end power supplies with the introduction of an innovative product for the telecommunications industry.  The FH02000DHV is the first high voltage DC input (260-400VDC)2000W power supply to possess a six-position shelf for up to 10KW of redundant power and offers unparalleled efficiency gains for telecom providers.

    “The FH02000DHV is an advanced power supply product with extensive engineering behind it, and it offers efficiency gains of over 15%,” said Hiroyuki Shiina, Manager for Fuji Electric’s Power Group.  “These types of gains are critical for telecom providers who are powering 48 DC bus architectures, and both our power supply and shelf were developed with this goal in mind.”

    The FH02000DHV, a 48VDC power supply providing 2000 watts from a DC input range of 260-400VDC, operates at an efficiency of 95% @ 50% load. This high efficiency is accomplished by boosting the input, providing a constant input for the phase-shift secondary circuit. Mechanically, this power supply is designed for hot-swap applications in a chassis size of 2.73”(69.5mm) wide by 4.86”(123.5mm) high by 12.65”(326.3mm) deep.

    Standard design features include active current share, variable fan speed, DC output over-voltage, over-current and short–circuit protection, remote sense, remote ON/OFF, over-temperature protection, and monitoring of output current and voltage.

    The FH12000DHV-6PR power shelf can hold up to six 2000 watt power modules and can be mounted in a standard 19” rack system using the only 3U in height and 19.6” depth. Each module slot has a separate and isolated DC Input connector, with all six outputs connected to common DC bus bars. The shelf also provides a connector for monitoring each of the power module’s I2C and PSMI features.

  • Fuji Electric Earns Top Honors for Superior Energy Conservation Efforts for UPS Products, Power Conditioners, and Vending Machines

    Tokyo, Japan, February 8, 2013 – Fuji Electric has been recognized by two Japanese agencies for their outstanding achievement in energy efficiency for three of their products.  The manufacturer earned the Director’s Award by the Agency of Natural Resources and Energy ; and the Japan Machinery Federation’s President Award for Superior Energy Conserving Machinery Award.  The awards were given to Fuji Electric’s Uninterruptible Power Supply (HX Series), their Power Conditioners (PVI Series), and their vending machine (which utilizes a hybrid heat pump). 

    As the global leader in power electronics technology begins their new fiscal year, the awards are an important validation for their ongoing energy conservation and efficiency efforts.  The award for the HX Series of Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) equipped with a 3-level IGBT module, and the PVI Series of power conditioners for use in mega-solar applications, demonstrate the company’s ongoing commitment to the environment. 

    By employing Fuji Electric’s proprietary new 3-level IGBT module, the HX Series of UPS achieves an efficiency of 97% with 40% less power loss than conventional models. Meanwhile, the PVI series of power conditioners realizes equipment efficiency of 98.5% and reduces power loss by 76% compared to conventional models.

    JMF’s President Award was given for Fuji Electric’s Can and Bottle Vending Machine model equipped with a hybrid heat pump.   By equipping this vending machine with cooling circuitry that uses an inverter compressor and a new electronic expansion valve, Fuji Electric developed a hybrid system that makes it possible to operate the heat pump internally and externally as well as in the internal compartment using a single compressor. This enables the vending machine to significantly reduce CO2 emissions over the product lifecycle.

  • Fuji Electric to Partner with Coca-Cola on Development of Energy-Saving Vending Machines

    Tokyo, Japan, July 3, 2012 – Fuji Electric Co., Ltd. announced today that its subsidiary, Fuji Electric Retail Systems Co., Ltd. has developed a new “night-shift” type of vending machine designed to save energy during peak electricity demand. The new vending machine has been developed in collaboration with Coca-Cola® (Japan) Co., Ltd.  as part of the “Apollo” ultra-energy-saving vending machine development project.

    In the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake that struck in 2011, Japan’s business environment has seen an increased demand for vending machines that consume power more efficiently.  In response this growing demand, the Apollo joint-development project was undertaken with the goal of helping to reduce electricity consumption during peak electricity usage hours by developing more energy-efficient vending machines.  Fuji Electric has stated that this project is one example of their ongoing effort to remain committed to responding to public demands and society’s needs.

    Since demand for electricity generally peaks in the daytime, this new peak-shift type of vending machine uses electricity for refrigeration during the nighttime, when electricity demand is comparatively low, thereby significantly reducing power consumption during the day. Refrigeration is performed entirely during the night and then maintained through a highly advanced insulation technology that employs vacuum insulation materials, as well as a thermal-storage technology that enables efficient electricity usage in the daytime. This allows the vending machine to provide cold beverages for an entire day without consuming any electricity for refrigeration during that peak energy-demand time.
     
    The vending machine’s performance will be verified, and its peak-shift nighttime refrigeration functions exposed to a maximum test scenario in a field test conducted in Kumagaya City in Saitama Prefecture and Tajimi City in Gifu Prefecture, the hottest regions in Japan beginning mid- July 2012.

  • Fuji Electric to Supply Door Systems for Macau Light Rapid Transit System

     Tokyo, Japan, June 18, 2012 – Manufacturer Chosen for Project in People’s Republic of China

    Fuji Electric Co., Ltd., announced that it has received orders from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd., for electrical door systems for the Macau Light Rapid Transit (Macau LRT) system, planned for construction by the government of the Macau Special Administrative Region (SARG) of the People's Republic of China.

    As the growing population of Macau leads to greater suburbanization, the government is planning to develop new means of transportation to connect the city center with suburban areas. The Macau LRT will be a new transportation line connecting the northern part of the Macau Peninsula with the island of Taipa and will comprise a total length of 20 kilometers. Operations are scheduled to commence in April 2015.

    Over a period of about one year, beginning from the autumn of 2012, Fuji Electric plans to deliver a total of 440 door systems for a driverless and rubber-tired automated people mover (APM) for Macau LRT.  Fuji Electric develops and manufactures door systems that achieve highly intelligent control over door operations based on the Company’s proprietary power electronics technologies and electric motor drive method. The door systems satisfy the strict safety requirements for railway operations.

    Since the Macau LRT will run on elevated tracks, the weight of the train cars, including all equipment, is required to be designed as light as the designed limit. Due to this requirement, Fuji Electric has reduced the weight of the door systems by about 30% compared to its previous model.  To provide certified railway-related products, Fuji Electric is planning to acquire Safety Integrity Level (SIL) certification applicable for railways. The design and development of product safety functions in relation to these standards are audited by independent certification organizations. Accordingly, Fuji Electric is aiming to manufacture and supply products with an even higher level of safety.

  • Fuji Electric Releases Compact IGBT Power Modules

    Tokyo, Japan, June 1, 2012 – Fuji Electric Co., Ltd., announced today that it has developed EasyPIMTM insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) modules*1 fitted with 6th-generation IGBT chips and plans to commence a sales release of this new product lineup.  EasyPIMTM modules are used in equipment such as general-purpose inverters equipped in industrial-use air conditioners. The modules can enable machinery to be made smaller and reduce energy consumption.

    Fuji Electric has expanded its product lineup in order to increase compatibility with products made by Infineon Technologies AG, a major power semiconductor company in Germany, and is marketing them worldwide.  (*1EasyPIMTM is a trademark of Infineon Technologies AG, Germany).  Fitted with 6th-generation IGBT chips, the modules help enable miniaturization*2 of machinery and achieve low power loss. *3.  The modules are designed with two types of pins—press fit pins (used in a method for attaching pins to substrates by applying pressure, not using solder) and solder pins (for compatibility with various kinds of substrates). The size is 25% smaller than previous Fuji Electric models, and the power loss is 20% less than previous Fuji Electric models.

    Demonstration Project in Business District of Albuquerque, New Mexico

    Tokyo, Japan, May 18, 2012 – Nine Japanese companies – Shimizu Corporation, Toshiba Corporation, Sharp Corporation, Meidensha Corporation, Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd., Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd., Fuji Electric Co., Ltd., Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd. and The Furukawa Battery Co., Ltd. – launched a demonstration study for the Albuquerque Business District Smart Grid Demonstration Project (hereafter “the Project”) consigned to them by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), to be carried out as part of its Japan-U.S. Collaborative Smart Grid Demonstration Project. The demonstration study will continue for two years, ending in March 2014. An opening ceremony for the demonstration facility took place in Albuquerque to mark the occasion, the many attendees including officials of New Mexico and the city of Albuquerque, the NEDO chairman, and presidents and executives of the nine participating Japanese companies.
     
    The Project demonstration study will be conducted using an existing three-story commercial building with approximately 7,000 square meters (m2) in total floor space and an electric power load near 400 kilowatts (kW). A micro grid (to supply power from the demand side) will be installed in the building from power sources consisting of a 50kW photovoltaic (PV) power generation system, a 240kW gas-engine generator, 80kW fuel cells and a 90kW battery system. By controlling each of these power generation systems, the demonstration study will (1) perform demand and supply adjustment within the building based on requests from a commercial electric utility supplier※, (2) operate the power generation systems according to energy and heat demand within the building itself, and (3) compensate for power output fluctuations in the PV power generation system of the regional utility company.
     
    Project participants from the U.S. side will include this regional utility firm – Public Service Company of New Mexico – as well as Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) and the University of New Mexico. Their involvement will enable a collaborative smart grid demonstration encompassing cooperation between the utility and demand sides. In addition, Accenture and Itochu Corporation will respectively undertake Project data management and demonstration site management support.
     
    The nine participating Japanese companies signed a project implementation agreement with NEDO in August 2010. By September 2011, they had completed the design and manufacture of the Project’s various power sources, heat source equipment and control system. Between October 2011 and April 2012, they transported, installed and adjusted the equipment at the building site.
     
    Note: Management of the gas engine, fuel cells, battery and air-conditioning system (demand response) will be carried out according to anticipated requests from the utility company based on its power demand estimates.
