  • Fuji Electric Launch of X Series IGBT-IPM that Contributes to Energy Savings in Production Equipment with the Industry’s Highest Class of Low-Loss Performance

Fuji Electric Co., Ltd. (headquartered in Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; led by President and Chairman of the Board of Directors Michihiro Kitazawa) is pleased to announce the launch of its new power semiconductor product, the X Series IGBT-IPM*1, which features the latest 7th-generation X Series devices to significantly reduce power loss.

*1: Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) Intelligent Power Module (IPM)

    1. Background

To improve productivity, the manufacturing industry continues to introduce NC machine tools and robots to automate production site, and against the background of global warming, realizing further energy savings in production equipment has become a challenge.

IGBT modules, which are a type of power semiconductor, are electronic components that convert voltage, frequency and AC/DC power through switching the power on and off. IGBT-IPM is equipped with a self-protection function to prevent failure due to overcurrent or overheating. For this reason, they are widely used in NC machine tools and industrial robots for production equipment that require high reliability.

Fuji Electric launched the X Series IGBT-IPM, which incorporates the latest 7th-generation power semiconductor device and contributes to energy savings in production equipment by the industry’s highest class of low loss performance. Mass production of the product starts in December and sales will be expanded globally, focusing mainly in Japan and China and so on, where automation is progressing.

    semi-press-release-igbt-ipm-gray

    X-Series IGBT-IPM (representative package)

    1. Product Features

    (1) Achieves energy savings in production equipment with the industry’s highest class of low-loss performance

This product is equipped with the latest 7th-generation IGBT device, which achieves the industry’s highest class of low loss performance through reduced device thickness and miniaturization of the surface structure. In power semiconductors, as the operating temperature of the product increases, the switching speed generally decreases and the power loss increases. However, with this product the power loss is reduced by using an IC that controls the IGBT drive to prevent the switching speed from decreasing under high temperature conditions.

This product reduces power loss during inverter operation by approximately 10% compared to the previous product (V Series IGBT-IPM) and reduces heat generated by power loss. As a result, the footprint area has been reduced by up to 54% compared to the previous product. This contributes to the energy savings and miniaturization of production equipment.

    (2) Contributes to stable operation of equipment with the industry’s first the warning output function of IGBT chip temperature

The IGBT-IPM is equipped with the IGBT device’s overheat protection function. With this product, when the temperature of the IGBT device exceeds 175 °C, the IGBT-IPM outputs an alarm signal to the control unit on the equipment and stops the switching operation to prevent the IGBT-IPM from failing.

In addition, this product is equipped with the industry’s first the warning output function of IGBT chip temperature, which outputs the warning signal when the temperature of the IGBT device exceeds 150 °C. Since switching operation is possible from when the warning signal is output until the temperature reaches 175 °C, where overheat protection is activated, the controller on the equipment can stop the production equipment at any time for maintenance. This enables sudden stoppage of production equipment to be avoided, contributing to stable operation.

  • Fuji Electric Announces New Launch of 7th Generation X Series IGBT Module HPnC

Fuji Electric Co., Ltd. (headquartered in Tokyo, Japan; led by President Michihiro Kitazawa) is pleased to announce that it has started mass production of its HPnC,*1 outfitted with a 7th-generation X Series IGBT*2 module, targeting the railway market.

    *1: High Power next Core
    *2: Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor

    1. Background

In recent years, railways have been attracting attention as an energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly means of transportation from the perspective of countering global warming. Meanwhile, since railcar operation requires large amounts of electric energy, it is necessary to further reduce the size and weight of railcar equipment and to increase the efficiency.

Power semiconductors (IGBT modules) are electronic components that convert AC and DC power through high-speed switching (turning power on and off). They are installed in the main inverter of the propulsion system that runs railcars, and in the auxiliary power systems that supply power for the air conditioning system and interior lighting.

Fuji Electric has recently developed and started mass production of the HPnC, a high-capacity IGBT module that reduces power loss and saves energy. The electric railway market is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 6% in the future, reaching about 50 to 60 billion yen in 2023.*3 Fuji Electric plans to roll out the HPnC on a global scale.Power semiconductors (IGBT modules) are electronic components that convert AC and DC power through high-speed switching (turning power on and off). They are installed in the main inverter of the propulsion system that runs railcars, and in the auxiliary power systems that supply power for the air conditioning system and interior lighting.

    *3: Estimate by Fuji Electric

    1. Product Features

    (1) Achieves energy saving by reducing power loss
The HPnC is equipped with the latest 7th-generation IGBT that boasts some of the best low-loss performance in the industry. By optimizing the structure of the package, Fuji Electric reduced the internal inductance, which interferes with high-speed switching, by 76% compared to the conventional products, resulting in low losses. An inverter equipped with the new HPnC reduces power losses during operation by about 8.6% compared to the conventional product (Fuji Electric’s High Power Module). Also, combined with the improved heat dissipation described in the next chapter, it reduces heat generation, resulting in a 19% reduction in size and a 13% reduction in weight compared to the conventional product.

    (2) Better reliability with reviewed substrate materials
One of the main causes of IGBT module failure is the deterioration of the interfaces between the different components due to the stress caused by temperature changes during operation. Given this, Fuji Electric has changed the base plate material from the conventional composite of aluminum and silicon carbide (AlSiC) to a composite of magnesium and silicon carbide (MgSiC), thereby improving the heat dissipation and lowering the stress caused by thermal changes. In addition, the terminals of the new module are attached to the insulation substrate by ultrasonic bonding*4 as opposed to the solder joint in the conventional module, thus reducing the failure rate.

*4: A method of direct bonding by applying ultrasonic vibration to the objects to be bonded.

    (3) Facilitates parallel connection of power semiconductors
The conventional product requires three separate bus bars (conductors for electrical connection; DC+, DC- and AC bus bars) that overlap each other when constructing a circuit, making the wiring configuration complicated when using parallel connection of power semiconductors. (See image.) Optimizing the terminal arrangement of this product has made it possible to arrange three types of bus bars in the same direction, easily facilitating parallel (multiple) connection of power semiconductors and contributing to improved assembly for various inverters.
